Beach, agriculture, real estate, and processing industry: Bouznika, a multifaceted hub

Beach, agriculture, real estate, and processing industry: Bouznika, a multifaceted hub

Barely a few decades ago, Bouznika was just a small town on the way between the metropolis and the capital. A stopover for families and drivers exhausted by the road. A small village where the traveller could eat and take a break before getting back on the road. Meat, grilled dishes, mechoui, and tajine became culinary specialities that customers from all over the region came to taste, hence the interest of restaurant stakeholders in organising and better presenting the local culinary product, which has been slow to materialise given the state of the small restaurants intended for this purpose. And then came the era of rapid and expensive development of the beach and summer resort under the famous Minister of the Interior, Basri. An era that would certainly see a boom along the entire coast, but with irregularities and excesses regarding land assets belonging to both individuals and the State.

Real estate projects for relatives and the privileged would drive up prices to such an extent that people started talking about billions for small apartments in the Kasbah and the bay of Bouznika. The prices of surrounding agricultural land would skyrocket, and settling in these residences would be a great luxury that only the country's billionaires could afford.

But the city of Bouznika also undertook another real estate expansion on the side of the road leading to Benslimane. On that side, concrete invaded the countryside, and major state projects, private companies, and civil servant cooperatives have been launched for years. Economic and medium-standing housing was built for a middle class that began to choose Bouznika as a place of residence, even if the workplace is sometimes within a radius of one hundred kilometres.

However, the main attraction remains the beach, which attracts many visitors from all over Morocco. During the summer season, the beach of Bouznika, known for having repeatedly obtained the "Blue Flag" as part of the "Clean Beaches" campaign initiated by the Mohammed VI Foundation for Environmental Protection, is stormed by holidaymakers from all over the country. Bouznika is a beach where all social categories mingle: the rich, the super-rich, the middle class, and the local poor who come to seek coolness near the ocean, where water sports and spearfishing are practised, as well as net and rod fishing. Obtaining this "Blue Flag" is the result of long-term work, first by the associative fabric and the efforts made by other stakeholders.

The summer season brings in a lot of money for several local communes in the region, especially Bouznika, where several scandals have erupted with the questioning by the justice system of several members of the said commune. At the end of this term, there is an attempt to beautify the main arteries of the city, especially the one leading to Benslimane. But the citizen is not fooled and discovers, following the scandals revealed by the media, that public funds have been squandered. Admittedly, the affair was hushed up and had no follow-up since the scapegoat policy was chosen, but it is certain that the supervisory ministry and the Ramid department must take the file out of the drawers. Otherwise, we would be forced to believe that the Ministry of Justice practises a selective policy in the choice of files.

But Bouznika is also an industrial hub. The installation of the Valeo group, a specialist in automotive wiring, in Bouznika a few years ago, as well as other small processing industries, has helped create several job opportunities, which encouraged the OFPPT to inaugurate a vocational training centre near the industrial zone. However, the region remains essentially agricultural. With its livestock, vineyards, market gardening, and dairy cooperatives, Bouznika constitutes an agricultural hub par excellence. With the Royal Stud Farm, which is among the best in the country, it is one of the most well-known regions for horse breeding. The associative fabric is very active in the region and participates largely in its development through several activities. It aims to take on a national dimension while improving over the years to promote this promising sector.

The Echerrat commune, in collaboration with the Rouad Association, was able to establish the Grape Festival. Many exhibitors and grape producers have the opportunity to present their products, techniques, equipment, among other things, thanks to the guidance and orientation of the officials. "The festival is starting to attract the interest of stakeholders in the sector, here and elsewhere. We are starting to reap some of the fruits of the efforts made by all parties concerned. Given the number of participants, visitors, and exhibitors, we can say without fear of being wrong that the Grape Fair is starting to achieve some of its objectives and is certainly on the right track," Ahmed Zaidi affirmed to "Libé," not without satisfaction, during the last edition of the said festival.
