The city of the Strait is succeeding in positioning itself thanks to the Tanger-Med port as well as the various activity and service zones, as a logistics hub par excellence. This was affirmed during the 3rd Spanish-Moroccan meeting on transport and logistics, whose proceedings ended on 6 March. Organised by the Spanish Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Tangier, in collaboration with the Spanish Embassy in Morocco, this two-day meeting, which was held under the aegis of the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness, saw the participation of representatives of more than a hundred Moroccan and Spanish companies. Speaking on this occasion, the Spanish Ambassador to Morocco, José de Carvajal Salido, stressed the importance of Tangier as a logistics hub, offering great business opportunities for investors. And since it was put into service, the Tanger-Med port complex has increasingly established itself as a lever for "developing trade relations between the two shores North and South of the Strait of Gibraltar," he stressed. Mr. de Carvajal took care to recall that the Tanger-Med port complex, located at the crossroads of the largest maritime routes, has played a major role in favour of strengthening Morocco's openness to the outside world. And in the context of strengthening Spanish-Moroccan cooperation, this large multimodal platform continues the process of developing "its connections with the main ports and logistics platforms in Spain, particularly those of Barcelona, Cádiz and Algeciras," he said. The same sentiment was echoed by Mehdi Tazi Riffi, director general of the Tanger Free Zone (TFZ), who highlighted the importance of the Tanger-Med port as a logistics and industrial platform par excellence. And among the projects that are intended to strengthen the city's logistics competitiveness, "the industrial zones of the Tanger-Med platform, developed on an area of nearly 1,200 ha," he affirmed. Note that the Tangier Free Zone, put into service in 1999 and presented as a true model of success, is linked by a partnership and cooperation agreement with the Barcelona Free Zone Consortium. Signed in May 2013, "this agreement aims to strengthen industrial synergies between the two platforms and offer development opportunities for industrialists looking to invest at the Tanger-Med level," explained Tazi Riffi. Let us underline that the Barcelona Free Zone has as its main mission the promotion and development of innovative projects in the real estate, logistics and technological sectors. According to Jordi Cornet, delegate of the Consortium of this zone, it has a large surface area (12 million m2), a large part of which is not yet exploited. Backed by the city's port, this zone wants to "play the role of gateway to the countries of Northern Europe," he said.
