About Tangier
Tangier (in Arabic: طنجة, Tanja; in Greco-Roman: Tingis) is a city in northern Morocco. It is the capital of the Tangier-Tetouan region and the Tangier-Asilah prefecture.
Located at the northern tip of the country, the city is Morocco's main gateway to Europe, from which it is separated by the 14 km of the Strait of Gibraltar. Its population stood at 669,685 inhabitants at the 2004 census, making it the fifth-largest city in Morocco.
Tangier has a rich history and a unique geography. The beauty and luminosity of the site have made it a source of inspiration for generations of artists and intellectuals. Tangier is also the only city that overlooks both the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. It has been nicknamed "the city of foreigners" following its numerous colonisations (the Phoenicians, Romans, Vandals, Arabs, Portuguese, English, French, and Spanish).
