Following the investigation carried out by the Ministerial Commission of Inquiry into the work accident that occurred last March at the Tighza mine, the Minister of Energy, Mines, Water and Environment announced that a detailed report on the circumstances and the definition of responsibilities for this accident has been drawn up and will be transmitted to the King's Prosecutor, in accordance with the regulations in force. Dispatched to the scene on March 20, this commission, composed of senior officials from the ministry's central administration, conducted an in-depth investigation into this accident that occurred on March 17 at the Tighza mine, near the city of M'Rirt (90 km south of Meknes), and which caused the death of two agents and left 11 injured, indicates a press release from the ministry received on Tuesday by MAP. The commission held interviews with the mine's officials and carried out investigations into the circumstances of the accident, while inspecting the extraction tower placed above the shaft, the extraction winch equipped with a drum and a 55 KW electric motor coupled with a speed reducer, as well as the cage used for transporting personnel and equipment. It also supervised tests that were carried out, with a load of 2 tonnes, along the trajectory taken by the cage at the time of the accident, adds the same source. Under the terms of these investigations, the commission concluded that the emergency stop system works correctly but that the winch operator reacted late after the cage had reached a very high speed. This late reaction would be due, according to the press release, to a probable physical unfitness of the winch operator, which will have to be decided by a medical expert opinion. The non-observance of the provisions of the general regulations on the operation of mines other than fuel mines and the non-respect of the maximum authorised number of people to be transported per trip (13 people instead of 10 people) were also among the remarks made by the said commission.
