Cemetery rehabilitation operation

Cemetery rehabilitation operation

The initiative is unprecedented and is, to say the least, commendable. An extraordinary cleanliness campaign has been launched in Hay Hassani, at the level of the cemeteries listed in the commune's territory. Indeed, initiated by the local authority under the Sidi Al-Khadir administrative annex, with the collaboration of the National Promotion employees, this campaign has already been implemented through a first operation at the "Chelh" cemetery. This consists of cleaning and maintenance actions, in order to rid the premises of piles of waste left by visitors who are not very concerned about safeguarding the environment. Places which, moreover, have a particular spiritual symbolism and whose state serves as an indicator of the degree of civilisation and the rooting of human values within a population. "This first operation took place in an atmosphere imbued with religious faith and a culture of citizenship, through sustained and continuous participation in this charitable work," the organisers indicate. This action comes at the right time, given the state of disrepair that the cemetery has experienced for years. Moreover, since burials have ceased for a long time due to the absence of basic conditions of cleanliness and security, the cemetery in question has turned into a shelter for wanted individuals and a breeding ground for delinquency. "The initiative had a very favourable echo among the local residents who consider this work, on religious and human levels, as a way of showing the respect due to the dead, as is strongly indicated by our religion, Islam. For the National Promotion employees, it was a question of implementing these same values through the rehabilitation of the cemeteries, their cleaning and the removal of weeds that have invaded the premises," it is emphasised. Furthermore, it should be recalled that a study published in 2013 by the National Human Rights Council (CNDH) had sounded the alarm on the advanced state of disrepair of cemeteries in Morocco. The study in question had clearly highlighted the lack of respect due to these places, which are supposed to be sacred, but which are the scene of deplorable, even criminal behaviour in some cases. This work had the latitude to highlight the urgency of engaging in a real rehabilitation of the cemeteries.
