Sit-in to denounce the situation at the port of Tan Tan

Sit-in to denounce the situation at the port of Tan Tan

After a postponement due to bad weather conditions, on Thursday, January 2, the operation to extract fuel from the ship stranded in Tan Tan, launched since Tuesday evening, is currently proceeding without complication. According to sources close to the team in charge of the operation, during the day of Saturday, January 4, more than 3,000 tonnes of fuel were unloaded. The technicians who are taking care of the extraction of the 5,000 tonnes of fuel are convinced that the operation will not drag on. They even emphasise that if weather conditions do not deteriorate, as was the case on Thursday, all the remaining industrial fuel could be extracted by Monday morning, as initially planned. The same sources stated that good weather conditions and the state of the sea facilitated the operation. The situation was completely different compared to the first days when the ten Dutch experts, led by their chief Sylvia Therwort, had attempted to pump the fuel in vain. Therwort had even emphasised that the operation would be "meticulous" and "difficult". Unfortunately, bad weather conditions forced the Dutch rescuers to suspend their intervention, pending a possible improvement in the weather. The Director of Police, Safety, Security and Environment at the National Ports Agency (ANP), M'Hammed Atmani, made it known that more than 3,000 tonnes of fuel had been evacuated from the tanker, representing some 70% of the total cargo, adding that 119 truck rotations had been mobilised for this operation. He emphasised that once the pumping operation is completed, the divers dispatched by the insurance company will carry out an inspection to measure the depth of the boat and repair any potential damage, before entering the towing phase which will mobilise a tugboat with a capacity of 18,500 horsepower. In parallel with this stop, a group of protesters organised a sit-in at the entrance to the port of Tan Tan. The protesters are demanding rapid intervention to save what can be saved and avoid another catastrophe at the entrance to the quays, which the protesters describe as a death trap for sailors and their vessels. The protesters are demanding the dispatch of a commission of inquiry to determine responsibilities in this accident which almost caused an ecological catastrophe affecting the coastline from Tan Tan to Tarfaya and beyond. They are demanding the restructuring of the port of Tan Tan and the construction of a new port meeting international standards and fulfilling all safety conditions, with the participation of all actors working in the maritime and nature protection field. Note that a deployment of law enforcement forces was observed in the vicinity of the place where the damaged tanker is located, at the moment when the Minister of Energy, Environment, Water and Protection was at the scene of the disaster.
