11 million quintals expected in Doukkala-Abda

Cereal production in the Doukkala-Abda region is expected to reach 11 million quintals (q) during the current season, compared to 5.1 million q during the 2011-2012 season, an increase of 120%, estimates the regional directorate of agriculture in a report. The areas cultivated with cereals were 175,300 hectares (ha) during the current season, an increase of 105% compared to forecasts, indicates the report presented during the ordinary session of the Chamber of Agriculture of the region, specifying that 22% of these lands are devoted to soft wheat and 39% to durum wheat and barley. Regarding territorial distribution, Sidi Bennour takes the lion's share of production with 47%, followed by El Jadida and Safi with 27% each, and Youssoufia with 6%, notes the same source, explaining this improvement by the supply of selected seeds of 147,557 q (134%) and fertilisers of 70,000 q (125%). As for climatic conditions, the report mentions significant early but irregular rainfall which fluctuated between 8 mm in December 2012 and 82 mm last March. The reserves of the dams in the Doukkala-Abda region reached 3.3 billion m3 during the current season, corresponding to a filling rate of 96%, compared to 86% during the 2011-2012 season, adds the directorate, specifying that the reference sale price for cereals was set at 280 DH per quintal delivered to the mill, for the period from 1 June to 31 October 2013.
