Livestock farming, the vocation of Khemisset

Livestock farming, the vocation of Khemisset

Due to the diversity of its ecosystem, the richness of its cultures and its water resources, the Khemisset region is characterised by varied livestock activities and significant animal production that generates numerous jobs. Dairy farming occupies an important place in the Khemisset province. Cattle numbers are estimated at 90,954 head, including more than 40,000 dairy cows. Cattle farming is dominated by the local breed, which makes up 75.8% of the herd; the improved breed comes last with 12,500 head, or 7.4% of the total, while the crossbreed represents 18% of the total. This production represents 15.5% of the potential production and is provided by 45 cooperatives with 4,247 members. The daily production collected in the Khemisset region is 70,000 litres. Thus, as part of achieving the objectives of the dairy plan, the Provincial Directorate of Agriculture (DPA) continues to deploy sustained actions for genetic improvement with a view to boosting the performance of dairy cattle. Among these genetic improvement actions, artificial insemination forms the basis of the genetic improvement plan structure. The potential production of red meat is estimated at 22,000 tonnes, of which 54.6% comes from cattle, 45.8% from sheep and 3.6% from goats. Controlled slaughtering reached 4,749 tonnes, of which 52.2% is provided by sheep from abattoirs (municipal and rural). The volume represents 15.3% of the province's total potential. Livestock farming plays an important socio-economic role due to its potential for job creation in rural areas, its participation in the production of raw materials for the agro-industrial sector (milk, wool, skin) and because it constitutes a permanent source of income for farmers.
