As has been the custom for several years, the province of Essaouira, renowned for its local produce and its argan-fed kid goat with its quite unique taste and virtues, hosted the Southern Goat Fair and local products from 30 November to 2 December 2012 under the theme "Goat-Argan: balance and valorisation".
This year's programme is rich and focused essentially on the theme of labelling the argan-fed kid goat, while also highlighting the issue of ecological balances in light of the problems linked to the argan tree.
To this end, the Chamber of Agriculture hosted a seminar on 29 November and 1 December 2012 under the theme "Agricultural advice and valorisation on goat farming" and "Labelling of the argan-fed kid goat, ecological balance, and development of the argan tree".
In this context, participants addressed the two axes from a health perspective on the one hand, by discussing goat pathology and veterinary supervision of goat farms. And on the other hand, from a professional point of view by debating the characteristics and management of goat reproduction, rational feeding for goats, and the role of professional organisations in improving goat breeds. The Green Morocco Plan was strongly present in the programme of this seminar, which debated the development strategy for goat farming within this plan, the project of which revolves around the argan-fed kid goat of Essaouira. Preserving ecological balances is essential regarding the interactions between the goat and the argan tree, as well as the impact of silvo-pastoral goat farming in the argan forest on the environment.
The Goat Fair programme also included a culinary competition based on argan-fed kid goat meat, an exhibition of goats and local products, a breeding competition, a round table on the valorisation and marketing of argan oil, as well as a tasting of kid goat meat.
