The City of Flowers sets out to reconquer its tourist vocation

A favourable wind is currently blowing on tourism investment in Mohammedia. The city seems to seduce a good number of investors charmed by its appeal and its multiple vocations. In this context, the project to build two major hotel units in Mohammedia will reposition the city in the niche of a new seaside, summer, and leisure tourism, capable of contributing to its economic and social revival. To this end, Accor Maroc and the Mfadel Group have signed two management contracts for the opening of two hotel units in Mohammedia, namely a Novotel and an Ibis. Located in the heart of the seaside city, the two new hotels, whose opening is scheduled for 2017, will necessarily strengthen the city's reception capacity. Covering an area of 7,500 m², the Novotel will have a capacity of 108 rooms with modern design and 3 high-tech meeting rooms, 1 hammam and spa, Lounge restaurant, and swimming pool. The investment amount is 135 million dirhams. This project will also allow for the creation of 180 jobs. As for the "Ibis" unit, it is spread over an area of 4,000 m² and will have a capacity of 90 rooms, 3 meeting rooms, and a Lounge restaurant, for an investment of 90 million dirhams. The creation of jobs is estimated at 120 positions. The city of Mohammedia offers great tourist potential, both for business travel and for leisure. "It was important for us to develop our presence in this city and it is now done through this new partnership," explains Antoine Guego. And to add: "it is an important step in our development plan in Morocco which will allow us to reach our goal of having 50 hotels by 2018 and, thus, confirm our position as leader at the national level." For the top management of the Mfadel Group, the company's competence and know-how fit into the new tourism and hotel dynamic, with the objective of accompanying the rise of the city of Mohammedia in all areas. Nevertheless, to ensure the sustainability of the tourism dynamic initiated, it is crucial to choose and prioritise the tourist sites to be developed first, and this according to their potential. It is also necessary to commit to environmental protection, to free up the seafront, often coveted by developers and squatted by cabins that disfigure the coastal line. Similarly, in order to attract more tourists, the city must encourage the creation of new hotel units and opt for the renovation of old ones, without omitting the rehabilitation of the Kasbah and the safeguarding of its heritage riches. Valuing the city through its history: The lack of animation has a negative impact on the tourism development of Mohammedia; it is a handicap that hinders ambitions and does not allow for the enhancement of the assets of the City of Flowers. The sun and the sea are always present, and visitors do not come only for these two elements, but for other things more important: the history of the city, the lifestyle of its inhabitants, and their culture. Mohammedia does not have a museum, does not schedule theatrical performances, with a worrying deficit in terms of exhibition galleries, etc. How to save the Mohammedia destination? Simply by valuing its assets and intelligently exploiting the cultural and artistic product. Valuing the assets of Mohammedia and its region undeniably requires reflection on a thoughtful repositioning of tourism in Mohammedia and its region. Officials must target seaside, rural, and discovery tourism.
