A weekly market fuels discord in Tan Tan

A weekly market fuels discord in Tan Tan

Hay Jadid is a new neighbourhood in Tan Tan whose name is far from reflecting reality. Indeed, the houses are built haphazardly without planning. The liquid sanitation network for which a budget of 300 million centimes had been allocated has still not seen the light of day. The streets without asphalt are mounds of rubbish and sand. To top off the inconvenience, street vendors have set up a weekly market there every Monday.

For a very long time, the city of Tan Tan has been known for its Sunday weekly market for which the municipality had chosen a site at the southern exit of the city, far from the inhabitants whom the decision-makers wanted to spare from noise pollution and foul odours due to the market's activities. It was to everyone's satisfaction, merchants and inhabitants alike. But that was at a time when there was a semblance of a municipality. Which is not the case today. Otherwise, how can one explain that individuals defy authority and set up a market in the middle of residential areas, endangering the health and safety of the residents?

“Despite the numerous complaints sent by consumer defence associations and groups, a local resident of this imposed market tells us, the municipal authorities have not taken any steps to put an end to the inconveniences endured by the neighbourhood's inhabitants”. “What worries us most, our source adds, is that the summer season is near with its high heat, water cuts, etc. I can hardly imagine a municipality that has tolerated the situation for years taking measures to put an end to our suffering and forcing street vendors to go to the Sunday market like all the merchants who come from different regions of the country”.
