After the "Hollywood-style chase" that shook the City of Rabat last Thursday, the debate over ride-hailing vehicles (VTC) has returned to the forefront. The local union and association coordination of small taxi professionals in Tangier published a denouncing statement, in which it expresses its solidarity with the driver who was the victim of the aforementioned assault.
It seems that the Taxi-VTC duel is not dying out and despite government initiatives, the latter continues to persist. During the incident, a first-category taxi was attacked while it was carrying out its professional activity.
Appalled by this assault, the coordination highlighted the gravity of this event, which could have compromised the safety of passengers and the driver, thus constituting a threat to the city's public safety. Furthermore, the said coordination firmly condemned these irresponsible behaviors, qualifying them as flagrant violations of the law and unacceptable practices requiring a rigorous and determined response.
In a poignant statement, the coordination expressed its unconditional support for the affected driver. It urged the authorities to intervene urgently to ensure his safety and restore his legal rights. Moreover, it insisted on the need for the competent authorities to organize the spaces and facilities dedicated to taxis, in order to avoid non-professional conflicts between drivers.
It also requested a strengthening of controls on illegal behaviors, the strict application of legal sanctions against the aggressors, and the acceleration of the transport system reform to ensure an efficient and harmonious functioning of the taxi sector.
Thus, the coordination announced its intention to engage in a dialogue with local officials, notably the head of economic affairs and the head of the transport department, in order to explore ways to prevent the repetition of such incidents. It called for a spirit of collective responsibility and scrupulous respect for the law to ensure the continuity and safety of activities in the taxi sector.
From Tangier to Rabat, the problem has become national, affecting citizens and professionals. It should be remembered that the security services of the city of Rabat arrested three small taxi drivers for their involvement, on Thursday, 27 December, in a chase described as "Hollywood-style" targeting a VTC. The incident took place on the road near the Prince Moulay Abdellah sports complex.
The video revealed dangerous behaviors during this chase, sparking a wave of indignation on social networks. Internet users called on the authorities to intervene urgently to put an end to the dangerous practices of certain taxi drivers towards workers using smart applications, thus threatening public safety.
