The Spanish Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Tangier (CECIT) organised, under the aegis of the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness and in collaboration with the Economic and Commercial Office of the Spanish Embassy in Rabat and Casablanca, the first Hispano-Moroccan transport and logistics meeting in Tangier. The main objective of this event was to bring together in Tangier Spanish companies from the Transport and Logistics sector with a view to promoting Spanish cooperation and investment in Morocco and particularly in the Northern region. The president of the CECIT, Jose Martinez Estevez, said he was happy with the massive presence of Spanish investors who responded to this invitation, which proves their interest in investing in Morocco and especially in the north of the Kingdom. "We aim through this to develop economic relations between the two Kingdoms," he added. "This meeting between companies will serve to facilitate the identification of commercial opportunities and to promote partnerships." He recalled the implementation of several sectoral reforms aimed at improving commercial competitiveness. He also pointed out the ambitious infrastructure programme: new roads and motorways will be operational and in 2015 the completion of the high-speed network connecting Tangier to Casablanca.

He concluded his speech with the organisation of several fruitful meetings in Tangier between Spanish and Moroccan investors. Tangier has become the preferred place for investments by Spanish companies. Spain is the second largest investor in Morocco, representing 18% of the country's foreign investments, thanks to the establishment of large companies and SMEs, something facilitated by its geographical position and its proximity and also by the low cost of labour. For his part, the administrator of Amtri/Nord, Jamal Hadi, drew up a historical picture of road transport in Morocco since 1970 by relying on statistics. He declared that "logistics in Morocco is still in its infancy and that the road is still long, nevertheless, the prospects for improvement and growth in this sector are promising, despite the obstacles." He concluded that the international road sector between Morocco and the European Union generates an annual turnover of 500 million euros, however this activity is dominated by foreign carriers at 90%. He ended by recalling the decision of the Spanish authorities to authorise Moroccan carriers to supply their vehicles with Spanish fuel and the difficulties that Moroccan carriers encounter in obtaining their visa. Finally, the representative of the Port Authority of Barcelona, Jose Torrent Pujol, gave explanations on the activities of this port which is the second by activity in Spain and which manages 35% of traffic between Spain and Asia. The session was closed by the signing of a convention between the CECIT, represented by its president Jose Martinez Estevez, and the Port of Algeciras, represented by Nicolas Martinez. The next day, the Spanish directors of 34 companies operating in the field of transport and logistics held a partnership and inter-company exchange meeting with their counterparts from 110 Moroccan companies.
