The city of Mohammedia is still facing problems of urban mobility due in large part to the weakness of the road infrastructure of certain important axes which have not undergone development operations in line with the importance of the current vehicle fleet. This state of affairs has a negative impact on the fluidity of traffic with all the risks and inconveniences. During the summer season, these problems are felt more; the weakness of horizontal and vertical signage, the inappropriate behaviour of some drivers, and the lack of civic-mindedness, in particular, accentuate the risks. The management of road safety arises acutely particularly during weekends and holidays, which implies urgent measures to remedy the situation. "The problem of traffic has led the services concerned to worry about this critical aspect. Projects have been initiated by the prefecture and the commune to overcome the dysfunctions at the origin of road insecurity," emphasises a communal official. "Roads have certainly been created, but they remain insufficient to cope with current traffic. Traffic light breakdowns are often at the origin of accidents and congestion. The only alternative lay in the creation of roundabouts at black spots," retorts a resident of Mohammedia. Indeed, many roundabouts have been built in various parts of the city. Developed and equipped with adequate infrastructure, they have limited the number of accidents. "The construction of roundabouts," points out a taxi driver, "is a good thing, but it must extend to other parts of the city, particularly the very busy areas." "It is not enough to create new roundabouts, but you must first think about the maintenance of existing ones," points out a resident of Mohammedia. He adds that it would be wiser to adopt an urban travel plan for better traffic management. Indeed, some intersections have deteriorated, such as the one located at the intersection of "Moukawama" and "Sebta" boulevards. The state of the roundabout located on the most beautiful avenue of the city in front of the ONCF station is also deplorable. It is devoid of signage and lighting. Travellers and visitors remain perplexed in front of this decor which conveys another image of the city.

The new roundabouts, moreover, have not been accompanied by awareness, communication, and information campaigns to allow road users to better adapt to the changes made. This new system has disrupted habits. It gives priority to vehicles that are already on the ring or engaged on the roundabout. "It is high time to look into this aspect and equip the roundabouts with adequate infrastructure so that they contribute to better traffic fluidity and limit the risks of accidents," affirms a taxi driver. Let us remember that roundabouts have a positive impact on traffic fluidity. They require users to be more vigilant. Nevertheless, awareness regarding their use would avoid many inconveniences.

According to traffic professionals, roundabouts have today demonstrated their effectiveness in terms of road safety, mainly thanks to the moderation of speeds they induce. In addition to the reduction in speed, the roundabout modifies the relative positions of vehicles in crossing the intersection. Furthermore, roundabouts can have a favourable effect on traffic fluidity when they give priority to vehicles that are on the ring. Roundabouts have a very large number of variants. There are considerable differences between a mini-roundabout intended mainly to slow down vehicles in a small intersection without visibility and rings of several hundred metres in diameter which have a traffic regulation function as important as their road safety function.
