Honey in all its forms in Ida Outanane

Honey in all its forms in Ida Outanane

The rural commune, Imouzzar Ida Outanane, is celebrating the 7th edition of the Honey Festival on 28 and 29 August, with a rich palette of economic, social, artistic, cultural, and educational activities. Initiated by the Al Ahd Al Jadid Federation for the development of Ida Outanane and the Agadir Idaoutanane Prefectural Council in collaboration with other partners, this edition provides for a fair including equipped stands, offered to local and regional producers, allowing them to exhibit this product and its derivatives, as well as other local products. Visitors will also be able to follow educational demonstrations of honey extraction, through glass beehives, and a gastronomic session hosted by an international chef, who will present recipes based on honey, to be tasted on the spot. The programme includes conferences on the scientific, technical, and economic aspects of honey production, within the framework of raising producers' awareness of the organisation, quality, and improvement of their honey extraction processes. A galaxy of speakers and professionals will host thematic workshops dealing in particular with the rational exploitation and extraction of thyme oil, beehive diseases, and the grouping of beekeepers into cooperatives. In addition to mornings for children punctuated by special educational sessions, in play areas reserved for them, the organisers are planning musical evenings hosted by a constellation of local artists and troupes, a medical campaign for the destitute from rural areas, in addition to several sports activities initiated and supervised by local associations. According to data from the Souss-Massa-Drâa Regional Council, the annual production of the region is around 925,000 kg of honey (22% of national production), at a rate of 5 kg per traditional hive and 14 kg per modern hive, knowing that the honey produced by the black bee and the Saharan bee (the most resistant to pathologies and the most productive) would represent 159 million dirhams, or 5% of the region's budget.
