About Taza
Taza (in Arabic: تازة) is a city in northern Morocco, which occupies the corridor between the Rif mountains and Middle Atlas mountains, about 120 km east of Fez. It is located at 150 km from Nador, and 210 km from Oujda (east). It has a population of 148.456 (2014 census) and is the capital of Taza Province.
Taza is located 230 km from Oujda, 120 km from Fez and 160 km from Al Hoceïma, in the "Taza corridor" which separates the Rif from the Middle Atlas.
Medina
Founded in 1135 by Abd el-Moumen, the Great Mosque was enlarged in the 13th century under the Merinids. It is considered one of the most beautiful mosques in the Islamic world. Skirting the sanctuary on the right, one can see several richly decorated doors before reaching a long, straight street which is the main artery of the Medina. On each side, silence hangs over bourgeois houses whose rare windows, sometimes topped with an awning, show ornate grilles; old carved cedar lintels ennoble the studded doors painted in bright colours. Beyond the small mosque of Sidi Azouz (12th century), one enters the Souk district, dominated by the curious minaret of the Market mosque.
The new town (Lower Taza)
Founded in 1920, offset in altitude from the Medina (Upper Taza). It is a modern town, with large boulevards with separated carriageways and numerous buildings under construction. A town in transition.
