Initiated in partnership between the wilaya of Chaouia-Ouardigha, the regional council, the provincial council and the Municipal council of Settat, the National Fair of Local Products opened its doors yesterday, Tuesday, and will continue until the 31st of the current month. This event, which has the theme "Local products, a vector for local development", aims, among other things, to better make known the developments and prospects for the evolution of the local products sector in Morocco through the implementation of a strategy specific to this promising sector. This fair also has the ambition to make known more the true assets and potential of Morocco in this area. On a larger scale, the National Fair of Local Products of Settat aims to create new opportunities for exchange and partnership, through the facilitation of exchanges and business relations and exchange between associations, cooperatives and operators from different regions of the Kingdom in the local products sector. It also encourages the organisation of B2B meetings between professionals interested in contacts targeted in advance, and privileged spaces for exhibition and exchange both between the 120 exhibitors participating in this first edition and the visitors expected at this fair. This event, which brings together a panel of researchers, professionals and representatives of civil society to allow them to share their experiences in terms of conservation, preservation and revaluation of local products, will be punctuated by conferences. These focus in particular on "The importance of local products in development and food", "The strategy of the Ministry of Agriculture and Maritime Fisheries in the development of local products" and "The role of consultations in the development and supervision of agricultural organisations". Note that the Chaouia, the granary of Morocco in cereal farming, of which the city of Settat is the capital, has significant agricultural potential, with a regional utilised agricultural area (UAA) that exceeds one million hectares, i.e. 10.7% of the national UAA. The crops practised remain largely dominated by cereals, i.e. 96% of the UAA, notably barley first, followed by durum wheat, soft wheat and maize. The rest is cultivated in olive trees and vines (3%) and potatoes (0.9%). With an area of approximately 2,000 ha of mint cultivation, the region is considered the first for the production and export of this plant at the national level. As for livestock, it is dominated by sheep production with nearly 1.7 million head, i.e. nearly 10% of the national livestock, with a strong presence of the emblematic breed of regional quality "Sardi". Cattle farming concerns for its part nearly 273,000 head, i.e. also nearly 10% of the national potential. The Chaouia region also participates in covering 23% of the needs for poultry meat at the national level and 24% in consumption eggs.
