Luminous "Gnaoui-jazz" fusion at the closing

The 17th edition of Jazz au Chellah lowered the curtain on Sunday, with art and style, by giving music lovers the chance to appreciate a meeting mixing authentic Gnaoua sounds with French impressionist melodies, embellished with a series of luminous improvisations.
Luminous "Gnaoui-jazz" fusion at the closing

The meeting between the two confirmed stars of the European jazz scene Jean Marie-Machado, Andy Sheppard and the Mâallem Hamid Kasri, accompanied by four Gnaoua musicians, made the ramparts of the historic Chellah site vibrate, while enchanting the aficionados who came in large numbers to attend the closing of the "Jazz" event of the capital. A French pianist and composer who spent his childhood in Morocco, Jean Marie-Machado studied classical music before teaching himself pop and jazz. Alongside the moving British saxophonist Andy Sheppard, an improviser gifted with a great melodic sense, they take a "Jazz" look at French impressionist classical melodies composed by Fauré, Ravel and Poulenc. Hamid Kasri stands, for his part, as a true ambassador of Gnaoua music. With his soloist voice, he unites the Gnaoua music of the North and South and has managed, by crossing his know-how with that of several brotherhoods, to develop a unique style whose feat of arms is fusion. The first part of the evening was lulled by the sound of the talented singer Luisa Sobral who, in addition to great interactivity with the public, gratified them with her compositions inspired by the 50s, wrapped in a certain sweetness and talent. Accompanied by her quartet, Luisa Sobral fuses jazz tunes and embellishes them with luminous improvisations. Her songs have earned her numerous distinctions (Best Jazz song at the Malibu music awards, Best Jazz Artist at the Hollywood music awards and the John Lennon songwriting competition in 2008). The release of her CD "the cherry on the cake" in 2011 with Universal marks her entry into the club of highly successful artists. Organised since 1996 by the European Union delegation to Morocco in partnership with the Ministry of Culture and the Wilaya of Rabat-Salé-Zemmour-Zaërs, and in collaboration with the embassies and cultural institutes of the EU member states and the Wallonia-Brussels delegation, the Jazz au Chellah Festival brought together 41 European and 17 Moroccan artists this year. Over the years, Jazz au Chellah has become a must-see for Rabat festivals and a major symbol of the partnership between Europe and Morocco.
