His Majesty King Mohammed VI gives a strong boost to urban development projects in the Oriental region

Intended to improve the living environment of local populations, strengthen basic infrastructure, and preserve the environment, these programmes provide in particular for the redevelopment and strengthening of the road network, the rehabilitation and extension of the liquid sanitation network, the creation of wastewater treatment plants in the two communes, the protection of the city of Bni Drar against floods, in addition to the completion of road works. Endowed with a total budget of more than 176 million dirhams (MDH), the urban upgrading programme for the city of Bni Drar focuses, in its urban qualification component (57 MDH), on the realisation, with the contribution of the National Initiative for Human Development, of a covered sports hall, a football pitch, public squares, and green spaces, in addition to the renovation of the public lighting and signage network. In its liquid sanitation component, the said programme provides for the rehabilitation and extension of the existing network, the construction of a pumping station, the installation of connections, and the construction of a natural lagooning wastewater treatment plant, with a capacity of 852 m3/day, for a budget of 62.4 million DH. The urban upgrading programme for the city of Bni Drar also provides for the protection of the commune against flood risks (57 MDH) through, in particular, the construction of a dam on the Oued Sefrou and a 1,000-linear-metre dyke between the Oued Tmedmat and the central basin. Mobilising investments of around 28 million dirhams, the urban upgrading programme for the commune of Naima should, for its part, contribute to the beautification of the city thanks to road, public lighting, and liquid sanitation works. This biennial programme (2013-2014), which also provides for the construction of a wastewater treatment plant, should contribute to strengthening the commune's position as a new emerging urban centre. These various urban projects reinforce the Royal Initiative for the development of the Oriental region, which celebrates its tenth anniversary this year and which aims to give the region's cities significant advantages in terms of attractiveness.
