People's Cinema Festival in Imouzzer Kandar: French cinema in the spotlight

People's Cinema Festival in Imouzzer Kandar: French cinema in the spotlight

Initiated by the Imouzzer Kandar Cine-Club in partnership with the Moroccan Cinematographic Centre (CCM) and the City Hall of Maxéville (France), this annual cultural event tends to take a look at the cultural specificities of many countries in the world, through the screening of Maghrebi and European films.

The ninth edition of this festival, which will take place from 1 to 4 November, will honour French cinema this year with the showcasing of numerous works, such as the film "Of Gods and Men" by Xavier Beauvois, inspired by the assassination of monks in Tibhirine, Algeria, in 1996, and "The Pantalon," a TV film by Yves Boisset about the First World War.

The festival programme will also be marked by the screening of numerous Moroccan films, including "Bab Sma Maftouh" (A Door to the Sky) by Farida Benlyazid, "The Great Journey" by Ismaël Ferroukhi, and "The Road to Kabul" by Brahim Chkiri. It also provides for a conference under the theme "The significance of the sacred in Maghrebi cinema," hosted by a plethora of academics, researchers, and critics.

The festival will also be marked by a meeting-signing of the sixth publication of the Cine-Club, entitled "Aesthetic and ideological aspects in Maghrebi cinema," in addition to the screening of other Moroccan and foreign feature and short films.

Organised in collaboration with the Sefrou province and the wilaya of the Fès-Boulemane region, this four-day cultural event also provides for a ceremony in tribute to Abderrazak Fakhr Ghazi, one of the deans of the National League of Cine-Clubs in Morocco, and other Maghrebi personalities for their role in the development of cinematographic art.

Previous editions of the festival had debated several themes, including "Musical anthology in Moroccan cinema," "The image of the marginalised in Moroccan cinema: functions and specificities," and questions relating to Moroccan film criticism.
