The city of Guelmim will host from 7 to 10 November the fifth edition of the Guelmim International Short Film Festival, which is characterised this year by the increasingly marked and assured presence of Moroccan filmmakers. Initiated by the Guelmim Young Creators Association, this festival is intended to be a favourable opportunity to introduce the public of this city, known as the Gateway to the Desert, to the novelties of the national cinematographic sector, and to anchor this culture among the youth of this city. The passion of the inhabitants of this city for this cinematographic event and their love for the stars of the national seventh art reflect ancient traditions of a collective attachment to cinema. The organisers aspire to give this event a cultural scope in order to make this festival a place of meeting and exchange between film buffs and professionals in the sector, hence the organisation of other activities in parallel with the official competition, namely the screening of films out of competition by Moroccan directors, then others within the framework of the fiction series, as well as films dealing with current issues, in partnership with national institutions within the framework of the programme dedicated to the preservation of memory. A dozen short films will compete for the three festival prizes (the Grand Prix, the Jury Prize and the Public Prize) which will be awarded to the winners during the closing evening. The training of young amateurs is also on the programme of this festival, which offers four workshops devoted to scriptwriting, film shooting, digital editing and sound processing, which will be supervised by Moroccan directors. A colloquium is also planned, which should bring together several potentials from different fields around the issue of cinema in Morocco. This festival also provides for the organisation of an exhibition dedicated to the young people of the Guelmim-Smara region, which will allow the discovery of new talents and unknown artists, as well as a craft fair which will highlight the richness of the Sahrawi and Amazigh heritage of this region.
