The guards of the Safia reserve south of Dakhla were threatened with death by poachers. It was during the course of last week, precisely on Tuesday, June 24, when two federal guards belonging to a surveillance team affiliated with the Association 'La Nature Initiative' were carrying out routine surveillance. Having noticed the presence of an all-terrain vehicle in the area housing gazelles and wanting to inquire about the reasons for the presence of this vehicle, they were surprised by one of the occupants of the vehicle aiming at them, ordering them to clear off. They did not need to be told twice and fled, not without having recorded the registration of the vehicle from which the threats came. They had previously noticed six skins of young gazelles, recently skinned. After the incident, which occurred a few cables away from the FAR units stationed on the security belt on the southern border of the Kingdom, the guards filed a complaint with the Royal Gendarmerie company of Bir Guendouz for the opening of an investigation to identify the offenders. It should be noted that poaching has become commonplace in this area where game has multiplied since the High Commission for Water and Forests and the Fight against Desertification introduced ostriches, gazelles, and other game there a few years ago.
