The frustration of artisanal fishermen is growing

In Dakhla, several artisanal fishermen have started a protest movement against the exclusion they are suffering. This movement comes following the arrival in Dakhla of a boat intended for deep-sea fishing, with an entire crew where no job position is provided for the fishermen of Dakhla. The protesters declare that the responsibility for this situation lies with the supervisory ministry and the local authorities. They deplore the situation of exclusion in which the local youth, who constitute the largest number of unemployed, find themselves. Furthermore, in a letter addressed to the Minister of Fisheries, a group of associations representing artisanal fishermen requested the operationalisation of social security for artisanal fishermen by making salary deductions intended for contributions to the CNSS. To guarantee the safety of the navigating personnel, the signatories request the keeping of a register allowing the listing of embarked artisanal fishermen. They also demanded the opening of fish markets where they can market all species and at any hour, as well as the easing of procedures allowing the obtaining of artisanal fishermen's booklets and administrative documents. To alleviate the overexploitation of the Sarga fisheries, the signatories ask to consider the opening of new fisheries. This will facilitate the task of the administrative personnel managing the files relating to the operation of 1,200 boats. An appeal to the regional director of the ONP invites him to open fish markets during biological rest periods, knowing that during said period, artisanal fishermen engage in fishing for fish other than octopus and that they do not find an adequate place to market their catches. Hence a loss of earnings both for them and for the ONP which does not collect the related taxes.
