A pilot project is born in Souss-Massa-Drâa

The kick-off of a pilot project on the adaptation of the private sector to climate change was given during the week in Aït Melloul in the Souss-Massa-Drâa region, the first of its kind in Morocco.

How to involve the private sector in climate change adaptation policies initiated by public authorities? The answer to this question is illustrated by the pilot project on the adaptation of the private sector to climate change launched during the week in Aït Melloul, in the Souss-Massa-Drâa region. Lasting two years, this initiative is part of a global program of German cooperation (GIZ). This project will be implemented in the Souss-Massa-Drâa region by the Regional Investment Center (CRI) and the Aït Melloul Industrial Zone Association, with the support of the Regional Council through its Environment commission and the Regional Observatory for Environment and Sustainable Development. This climate change adaptation project comes in one of the southern regions of the country subject to periods of drought, but which experience exceptional rainfall like those that caused more than 30 victims on November 24, 2014.

A World Bank report published on November 23, 2014, titled "Turn Down the Heat: Confronting the New Climate Normal", emphasizes that alarming changes are already being felt in the four corners of the world, damaging crops and coastal areas and threatening the security of water supply. In Morocco, the World Bank report "Turn Down the Heat", presented in Rabat at the beginning of April, indicates that a temperature increase of 4 degrees could reduce agricultural yield by up to 39%. The consequences of global warming can be more devastating, adds in the same sense the Minister of Environment, Hakima El Haïti, insofar as this change could lead to an immigration movement and create new zones of tension. "Failing to fight against climate change, we must adapt," maintained the president of the Regional Council Brahim Hafidi, quoted by the MAP, during the inauguration of the Aït Melloul project.
