Aït Melloul, a small village until the 1960s, has become an important urban centre, a crossroads for roads serving the South. It is now a large conurbation of more than 150,000 inhabitants, a service centre for the whole of the Souss and the southern regions.

The population is composite: the original population, the Ait Aderdour, Aït Kaddour, Aït Aaiad, Aït Ihahan, etc., then the Chiadmas, Doukkalas, Aabdis, Marrakchis, Demnatis, Chtoukis, Houaris, Roudanis, and Sahraouis came to settle and became Melloulis.
