Tangier says goodbye to Ayman Merzouki

The city of Tangier has said a final farewell to one of its left-wing militants: Ayman Marzouki. The funeral of the deceased, who died at the age of 51 following a heart attack, took place at the Al-Moujahidine cemetery, in the presence of all the political tendencies of the capital of the North, and a large crowd, of left-wing militants, in addition to his students. The entire left-wing family had taken part in the deceased's funeral: PPS, USFP, PADS, PVD, PCN, in addition to the PSU, represented by all the members of its political bureau.

The deceased had been one of the leaders of the National Union of Moroccan Students at the beginning of the 80s. At the beginning of the 90s, he had contributed with others to the creation of the Movement of Independent Democrats, then the Unified Socialist Left, before constituting the Unified Socialist Party (PSU) where he was a member of the national council. In the mid-80s, he had served a two-year prison sentence for his militancy within the UNEM and the progressive basist faction, and had, in the meantime, been sentenced by the justice system in Tangier to 30 years in prison in absentia, a verdict that was not executed. As a philosophy teacher, Merzouki contributed to the creation of the Moroccan Association of Philosophy Teachers.
