The major structural development projects scheduled in the city of Salé, aimed at improving the living conditions of its inhabitants and making the city one of the Kingdom's largest urban hubs, will help break the monotony of long years for this city, which has been considered a "dormitory town".
Its proximity to the city of Rabat, which is experiencing exponential urban development, its ancestral history, and its strategic position on the right bank of the Bouregreg river estuary, will certainly allow the city to change its image and become an important urban centre.
Indeed, the integrated urban upgrading programme for the city of Salé, for which HM King Mohammed VI presided over the launch ceremony last February, is one of the various development programmes aimed at modernising the urban fabric of the Kingdom's cities according to a coherent and balanced vision.
This three-year programme (2014-2016) aims to transform the city into a major urban hub of the Kingdom through the integration of the old urban fabric into the socio-economic dynamic that the city is experiencing.
Mobilising investments of around 1.038 billion dirhams, this programme is structured around several axes, namely the rehabilitation of the old Medina of Salé and its hotels, the restoration of historical monuments, the rehabilitation of buildings at risk of collapse, the development of the corniche and the coastal road, the upgrading of the city's northern entrances and sports facilities, as well as the upgrading of under-equipped neighbourhoods.
Regarding historical monuments, this axis focuses in particular on the development of Dar El Qadi, Dar El Baroud, Kasbah Gnaoua, and the historical walls, as well as the upgrading of cultural circuits and the creation of a centre dedicated to Morocco's heritage.
As for the hotels and buildings at risk of collapse, to which the Ministry of Housing and Urban Policy will contribute 157.5 million dirhams, it provides for the upgrading, repair, or demolition of buildings at risk of collapse and the rehousing of the inhabitants.
