As part of its efforts to develop grassroots football and football practice among children in the Souss region, the Souss Football League has begun implementing the Grassroots programme in the region for the months of May and June 2011. Grassroots is a collaborative project between FIFA, the FRMF, and the Souss League.
‘’Grassroots Agadir 2011’’ involves a total of 197 participating teams, 2,758 children, and 197 educators and chaperones.
Children from four geographical zones are therefore benefiting from this programme dedicated to grassroots football: Agadir (73 teams, 1,022 players, 73 educators), Inezgane (96 teams, 1,344 players, 96 educators), Oulad Teïma (16 teams, 224 players, 16 educators), and Tiznit (12 teams, 168 players, 12 educators). The budding footballers participating in this programme come from the Ministry of Youth and Sports' sports schools, clubs, and primary schools in the region. It should be noted that the best elements will be admitted to a pre-training centre.
The Grassroots programme, which is aimed at children, boys and girls, aged 6 to 12, aims to bring as many children as possible to the practice of football in order to share human values with them and give them pleasure in playing. It takes into account the culture and environment of the participants as well as the local organisation.
While for some, grassroots football is a simple leisure activity, for others, it is a sporting activity practised at school or within an association, which means preparation and competition. However, for many children around the world, football is above all the only leisure activity, or even a social elevator.
Finally, ‘’Grassroots places a central focus on the pleasure of playing. It is an essential philosophy: the game is the best educator!’’
