Médiouna gets a health boost

The province of Médiouna is upgrading. According to a well-informed source, several restructuring projects are being finalised. These mainly concern a regional hospital, the construction of which will soon be launched. "Once the technical study is finalised and adopted by the central services of the Ministry of Health, the project will be launched," we learned from the same source, who specified that the province is striving to overcome all administrative "complications" and, above all, to find the final sources of funding for the project. "The hospital and many other projects are of great importance to the region. They have been requested for a long time by the local population. In fact, the province is accelerating the pace of implementation of these infrastructures." It must be said that this mission was not easy for the officials of Médiouna. According to well-informed sources, marathon meetings have taken place within several departments of the province in order to facilitate administrative procedures and overcome stumbling blocks of a financial and technical nature. In this context, the municipal council of Médiouna insisted on the construction of an indoor sports hall in this part of the metropolis. All the studies reserved for this project are currently finalised. Likewise, the technical problems related to the connection of liquid sanitation networks. Among the other structuring projects in Médiouna, there is also talk of the creation of a pilot market. "This project aims to improve the standard of living of several families living in Médiouna. The pilot market will also make it possible to counteract the phenomenon of street vendors and its negative effects on regional development," says a well-informed source within the region. The plan for the pilot market has been effectively adopted and authorised by the Casablanca Urban Agency. Its specifications are also ready and validated by the municipal council. The project is currently in the final phase. Once the rent amount is determined, a specialised committee will meet to oversee the distribution of shop keys to the beneficiaries. Let us recall that this experience is not the first of its kind. A large number of pilot markets have been left unfinished or abandoned by beneficiaries a few weeks after launch. According to a source close to the file in Médiouna, these development projects are carried out in consultation with all stakeholders in order to guarantee their success. It should be noted that the province of Médiouna has experienced great development in recent years thanks to the installation of industrial zones.

Presentation of the province

The province of Médiouna was created following the administrative division of September 2003 concerning the prefectures of the districts. Covering an area of approximately 227.8 km2 (17.6% of the region's surface area), Médiouna, which has an agricultural and industrial vocation, consists of two urban communes (Médiouna and Tit Mellil) and three rural communes (Majjatia Ouled Taleb, Lahrouine and Sidi Hajjaj Oued Hassar). It has suffered the consequences of the expansion of the metropolis's urbanisation. The total population of the province of Médiouna continues to increase at a rate of 1.7% for urban areas compared to –0.13% for rural areas. The province is becoming increasingly urban due to industrialisation. A good number of agricultural lands have disappeared over the last few years. Due to the scarcity of vacant land and the soaring prices in the urban perimeter, several investors have decided to look for land outside the urban perimeter for their considerable advantages and, in fact, they have opted for Médiouna, Nouaceur and others. Agriculture, industry, construction and services are the main activities of the inhabitants of Médiouna.
