Hassani poetry in the spotlight

Hassani poetry in the spotlight

The National Human Rights Council (CNDH), Laâyoune-Smara section, recently organised a ceremony in Laâyoune to present the collection of the Hassani poet the late Mahjoub Oueld Attayeb Oueld Yara, with a view to contributing to the promotion of Hassani heritage in accordance with the provisions of the new Constitution, as one of the levers of national cultural identity. This meeting, which is part of the strategy aimed at preserving the cultural memory and the tangible and intangible cultural heritage of the region, aims to pay tribute to the symbols of Sahrawi culture, to perpetuate their memory, and to archive their works with a view to enriching the Sahrawi library. The signing of this collection serves to make known the Moroccan Sahrawi heritage, strongly imbued with Hassani culture and its poetry, which constitute one of the expressions of the very lively and jealously guarded oral tradition that continues to furnish the daily life of the inhabitants of the Kingdom's southern provinces. The programme of this meeting, which took place in a hotel in Laâyoune, included readings of poems from the collection, testimonies about the poet, and interventions by poets who highlighted the artistic characteristics of Hassani poetry, the various themes of Mahjoub Oueld Attayeb's poetry, as well as the role of Hassani poetry and its ability to reflect the concerns of the population. According to the speakers at this ceremony, Sahrawi cultural heritage is not the preserve of the inhabitants of the southern provinces alone but belongs to the entire nation, hence the need for the involvement of all actors in the promotion of Hassani culture and all components of national identity. According to them, it is necessary to highlight Hassani poetry as an art capable of addressing the daily problems and approaches of the inhabitants in the south of the Kingdom, and which has for decades aroused the pride of the populations of these provinces. It should be noted that Hassani poetry is filled with terms commonly used in standard Arabic, or in significant phrases, in addition to lexical borrowings from other languages, prophetic sayings, Quranic surahs, as well as Arabic poetry from all eras.
