The Laâyoune meeting is initiated as part of activities aimed at highlighting the importance of the upcoming world climate conference (COP 22) which will be held next November in Marrakech.
Participants in a consultation workshop, held on Tuesday in Laâyoune, at the initiative of the regional section of the Moroccan Federation of Newspaper Publishers (FMEJ), pleaded in favour of strong involvement of regional media in the various preparatory meetings for the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP22).
During this workshop, initiated in coordination with the sections of the Moroccan Coalition for Climate Justice (CMJC) and the National Union of the Moroccan Press as well as the press club in Laâyoune, the participants discussed the role of the media, alongside other national actors, in strengthening mobilisation with a view to making the next global climate event, scheduled for next November in Marrakech, a success.
In this regard, the various speakers emphasised the need to maintain this same dynamic of mobilisation within the framework of the upcoming inter-regional "Pre-COP 22" meetings, which will be organised at the initiative of the CMJC in four cities of the Kingdom, namely Oujda, Casablanca, Marrakech, and Laâyoune.
The Pre-COPs have "the ambition to strengthen national mobilisation and communication to achieve participatory commitments on environmental protection and sustainable development specific to each region by 2030," they specified.
These meetings will also be an opportunity to strengthen the debate on all issues related to the environment and climate, especially since Morocco is committed to ambitious environmental preservation programmes.
