The twenty-sixth edition of the annual Olive Festival of Guercif took place, from 13 to 15 November 2015, on the theme "The olive tree, an essential pillar for the development of the province". Organised by the municipal council with the support of the Guercif provincial council and the commune of Houara Ait Rahhou, this festival saw, this year, the introduction of novelties in the programme, essentially focused on social and cultural activities and Tbourida shows with the participation of 500 horsemen. Thus, a round table on the methods of cultivation, harvesting, valorisation, and marketing of olive production was organised with the participation of agricultural technicians and olive growers' cooperatives. The speakers requested technical, financial, and organisational support for olive growers who find themselves forced to sell their olive production at paltry prices, due to a lack of means and possibilities for packaging and valorisation.
As for olive cultivation in the province of Guercif, it is in continuous growth. Thus, the area of olive trees increased from 18,000 ha in 2009 to 24,200 ha in 2014. Olive production reaches 30,000 tonnes, 80% of which is intended for processing into preserves and 20% for the extraction of olive oil. The Olive Festival, the opening of which took place under the chairmanship of the governor of the province, Atmane Souali, was marked by an exhibition of agricultural products and equipment with the participation of 30 exhibitors, including associations and olive growers' cooperatives. The festival also saw a circumcision ceremony for the benefit of more than 120 needy boys. Likewise, wall murals expressing support for the territorial integrity of the Kingdom, the struggle of the Palestinian people, and the protection of the environment were created. Visits to the home for the elderly and the civil prison of Guercif were also organised, in addition to a meeting on poetry with the reading of poems by bards from Guercif. The festival was also distinguished by an artistic evening hosted at Bir Anzarane Square by local singers and a Taktouka Al Jabalia group from Taounate. This annual agricultural event closed last Sunday with a visit to the exhibition stands, a fantasia show, and an awards ceremony for deserving competitors in various sports competitions including handball, chess, pigeon shooting, pétanque, and cross-country.
