Arriving in Dakhla on the evening of last Saturday, the Hawaiian delegation led by the former governor of the 50th US state, Neil Abercrombie, took advantage of Sunday to meet with the Wali and the elected officials of the Oued Eddahab-Lagouira region, before visiting the various points of economic and social interest as well as the surroundings of the city where tourist and sports structures are erected.
On Monday morning, the Hawaiian delegation and the Moroccan members of the Morocco-Hawaii Friendship Association, surrounded by the Wali of Dakhla, the governor of Aousserd, the elected officials of the two provinces, and representatives of civil society in the region, attended the conference led by the former governor of the State of Hawaii, before proceeding to the signing of the memorandum of understanding between the representatives of the two cities of Dakhla and Honolulu.
In his conference, Neil Abercrombie emphasised the common points between the regions of Dakhla and Hawaii, stressing: "Your region is like ours, located at the extreme south of the country. Our island, which is very small in the great ocean, is like your city, which is located between the ocean and the other ocean that is the Moroccan Sahara desert. Our region, like yours, is known for water sports".
The former governor dwelt on the importance of the King Mohammed VI week, the first edition of which was organised in 2012 in Honolulu. This week, the many visitors to this cosmopolitan city will discover the rich and varied culture of Morocco. The fountain designed 100% by Moroccan artisans had a place of choice in the Honolulu Museum, just as the statue of His Majesty the King was placed in the peace garden among those of eminent personalities who contributed to making peace in the world.
On the economic level, Hawaii, indicated the former governor, has long experience in the fields of tourism and water sports. This experience will be made available to the economic actors of Dakhla, whose stability, security, hospitality, and the warmth of the welcome we perceived will, without a doubt, be an added value for the development of these sectors in the pearl that your city represents. After the conference, the representatives of the two regions proceeded to the signing of a memorandum of understanding and cooperation. A memorandum that will be followed by the signing of a twinning agreement between the cities of Dakhla and Honolulu.
