Investment: A new wholesale market for fruit and vegetables for Tangier

The city of the Strait will be equipped with a new, modern wholesale fruit and vegetable market that meets the required quality standards. With a total investment of nearly 80 million DH, this new project is part of "the continuity of major development projects included in the Tanger-Métropole programme", according to those in charge of the project.

It should be noted that this wholesale market project is one of the most important municipal facilities in Tangier, which are planned, within the framework of the Tanger-Métropole plan, to be relocated to the periphery in order to decongest the city centre. Spanning a total area of 11 hectares, this project will be built to replace the current wholesale market, located in one of the most densely populated districts of the Béni Makada arrondissement. It will thus contribute to decongesting traffic on the main arteries, including the avenues of the Ligue Arabe square as well as the two avenues Moulay Ismaël and Tarik Ibnou Ziad. These are daily traversed, among others, by lorries and vans intended for loading and unloading goods at the current wholesale market. Located on the city's southern bypass, the new project is inspired by existing international models, particularly in France, Spain and Argentina. It consists of a vegetable hall of 5,520 m2, a second of the same surface area dedicated to vegetables, and a third for sales of 2,500 m2. Premises of 1,200 m2 will be fitted out to accommodate refrigeration facilities. Some 402 m2 will be intended to house administrative offices (260 m2), bank premises and counters (100 m2) and control services (42 m2).

While an area of 9,200 m2 will be set up to house empty crates and 1,850 m2 for sales from lorries. And like the large, ultra-modern wholesale markets, an area will be set up to accommodate cafés-restaurants (260 m2), a hotel establishment (620 m2), a prayer room (100 m2) and sanitary blocks (546 m2). As for the exterior landscaping, the project notably provides for the construction of car parks and green spaces.
