Cherries in the service of local development

The 5th edition of the Cherry Festival, organised over two days by the "Anarouz" Association of cherry producers in partnership with the regional directorate of Agriculture of the Meknes-Tafilalet region, opened on Saturday in the Ifrane province.
Cherries in the service of local development

The meeting, organised under the banner "The Aïn Leuh Cherry: Securing production, a prerequisite for sustainable territorial marketing", aims to promote cherry cultivation, offer a space for dialogue and exchange for participants to debate the constraints hindering its development, enhance the cultural and tourist assets with which the commune of Aïn Leuh is endowed, and highlight the role of cherry cultivation in the development of the Ifrane province. In a statement to MAP, the president of the "Anarouz" Association of cherry producers, Mimoun Boutaarit, explained that the meeting is intended as a space for the exchange of ideas and experiences between professionals and the various stakeholders interested in the development of cherry cultivation in the region, specifying that the event aims to encourage farmers to replace low-profit crops such as cereals (wheat, barley) with cherry cultivation. The event, which is marked by the organisation of a cherry exhibition featuring 20 stands with the participation of local exhibitors, also aims to promote the Aïn Leuh region and cherry cultivation in the Ifrane province, which produces 62% of cherries nationwide. During the first day, two workshops were organised in the conference room of the Ifrane province prefecture, in the presence of the governor of the Ifrane province, Jelloul Samsam. The first workshop focused on cherry production and the climatic hazards likely to impact cherry cultivation in the province. The second workshop focused on the added value generated by local products. The participants in the two workshops decided to create a local committee responsible for developing a sectoral agricultural development plan for cherry cultivation so that it constitutes a lever for local development. On the occasion of this event, the regional director of Agriculture for the Meknes-Tafilalet region, Kamal Hidan, accompanied by several officials from the agricultural sector, visited a modern cherry jam manufacturing unit created at the work centre of the provincial directorate of agriculture of Ifrane. In addition to the organisation of workshops on cherry cultivation, the programme includes several cultural, sports, and artistic activities, the organisers indicated. Cherry cultivation in Morocco covers an area of more than 1,700 ha. The Meknes-Tafilalet region accounts for 51% of the national area. The cherry tree is planted there on 865 hectares, divided between the commune of Aïn Leuh (70%) and other sites.
