"The governance of the Moroccan media landscape between pluralism and diversity" at the centre of a meeting in Tetouan
A study day on "the governance of the Moroccan media landscape between pluralism and diversity" was organised, Saturday in Tetouan, at the initiative of the Multidisciplinary Faculty and the Tamuda Association of Cultures.
Speaking on this occasion, the president of the Tamuda Association, Adil Dadi, emphasised the role that Moroccan media play in the protection of the values of democracy, modernity, and plurality, the guarantee of equality and freedom, and the strengthening of the openness of society, its development, and its involvement in the management of local affairs and decision-making.
In this context, he stressed that the Moroccan media field has experienced a significant qualitative and quantitative change in recent years, in light of the successive constitutional achievements and the 2011 constitution, which aims to give a new impetus to the media landscape at the structural and legislative levels and to promote good professional practices in this field.
For her part, the former president of the Moroccan Organisation for Human Rights, Amina Bouayach, gave a presentation on "the right of access to information as one of the human rights, between theory and practice", in which she stressed that the implementation of the provisions of the Constitution, which aim to guarantee societal rights, the principles of governance, and openness to the cultural and linguistic values of the Kingdom, is likely to strengthen the role of Moroccan media as one of the main tools to consolidate democratic construction and succeed in the institutional reforms undertaken by the country.
She thus considered that the promotion of journalism as a public service, in accordance with the ethics of the profession and the legal and organisational rules in force in Morocco, should further strengthen the individual skills of journalists and accompany the rapid development of the national and international media landscape and means of communication, at the service of the affairs of society and the political, social, cultural, and economic aspirations of the Kingdom.
For his part, the regional director of the Ministry of Communication, Ibrahim Chaabi, emphasised the significant development that the legal framework governing the press sector in Morocco has experienced in recent years, in order to accompany the qualitative change of the national media landscape, noting that the reforms contained in the draft press and publishing code should allow for the strengthening of press freedom and guarantee good practice of the profession and the independence of the journalistic enterprise, in order to meet the aspirations of different components of the national media landscape.
The speakers also assured that a balanced journalistic practice will allow for the promotion of the exercise of the profession, the consecration of democratic values, and the guarantee of positive interaction between decision-makers and the different components of society.
