The lute is back. From 10 to 12 May, it will be, as usual, in all its states. In Tetouan, where it even has an international festival in its name, the favourite instrument of the Arabs has regained all its aura. The 15th edition will be most rich and varied with a most fruitful programme, a notable presence in the person of two great artists, the Lebanese Marcel Khalifé and the Iraqi Nassr Shamma. Two virtuosos among the most prominent in the world of modern music.
One of the highlights of this edition will be the vibrant tribute that will be paid to Marcel Khalifé. Indeed, the International Music Council of UNESCO will offer him the "Ziryab of Virtuosos" trophy, during the opening of this high-colour artistic event. This prize is awarded to him by the Ministry of Culture and the National Music Committee in recognition of his rich career and his numerous decorations. According to a press release from the organisers, Marcel Khalifé will also sign his latest work "Andalusian Suite" in Tetouan: a work created for lute and orchestra.
Another strong point of the festival is none other than the invitation of the Iraqi concert performer Nasser Shamma who will perform with his ensemble of lute players. In parallel with the fifteen virtuosos from Morocco, Iraq, Lebanon, Egypt, Iran, Greece and Armenia, who will enchant the music-loving public of Tetouan, a fervent tribute will be paid to the lute player and singer Mahmoud El Idrissi, in reward for his artistic contribution to Moroccan song.
