Mediterranean Friendship Football Trophy: Montpellier offers itself the MAT

The Moghreb Athlétic of Tétouan (MAT) could not keep its promise to achieve a good performance and to impose itself before the French team of Montpellier, within the framework of the activities of the first Mediterranean Friendship Football Trophy, which took place on Thursday 3 January in the city of the strait. To this effect, the outgoing champion of Morocco lost by 2 goals to 0 during a friendly match opposing it, last Thursday, to the champion of France. The two Moroccan internationals Younès Belhanda and Abdelhamid El Kaoutari were the great absentees from this friendly match, due to their presence with the national team in South Africa for the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations (CAN). The third other Moroccan player and striker of this French club, Karim Aït-Fana, could not participate in this trophy because of his injury to his right knee.

Unlike the opposing team, the MAT showed itself to be more defensive from the beginning of this match. This allowed it to finish the first half with a goalless score (0-0). But after the break, the desire to win of the two opposing camps, during the second half, accelerated the pace of the game in favour of the outgoing champion of France. Because the Argentine striker of Montpellier, Emanuel Herrera, opened the scoring in the 46th minute. The Montpellier defender Vincent Di Stefano subsequently consolidated his club's lead with a second goal in the 75th minute.

Although it did not attract a large public, this first trophy experienced, at the end of this event, acts of violence that caused slight material damage to the Grand Sports Complex. And as expected, the curtain-raiser match opposing the Ittihad Riyadi of Tanger (IRT) to the Spanish team Cadix CF saved the day, because the majority of the public present at this event was composed of supporters of the local team. Both playing in the second division in their respective countries, the two teams left each other on a shared score (1-1). The young Tangier player Abdelilah Amimi was the first to open the scoring just after the kick-off. The striker José de Cadiz managed, for his part, to offer his club the equaliser goal shortly before the final whistle of the first half.
