All associations working in the field related to serious illnesses or disabilities are now grouped into the "Network in charge of disabled people in northern Morocco". The creation of this new network is intended to group together the various private initiatives and amplify their impact. The main mission of this important network is to "integrate disability into various public policies", notably in partnership with the world organisation "Handicap International". To this end, a programme specially designed for North Africa was presented by the Spanish Agency for International Cooperation. During a press briefing held in Tetouan, the head of the network, Abdelmalek Asrih, had to recall the primary needs of disabled people such as accessibility to all public places, transport, the right to employment, access to training, and other material and logistical means capable of improving the living conditions of these people who require the greatest attention. A whole series of recommendations was stated during this assembly. A certain number of recommendations were issued: the integration of the "disability" section in the deliberations of parliamentary groups, the political participation of disabled people, and, finally, integrating the global vision of disabled people into the programmes and strategies of the various axes of local and regional development. From 24 December 2011 to 30 March 2012, workshops were organised in the city of Asilah to define the integration systems for disabled people, organise activities within Parliament and monitoring commissions, and appoint a representative of disabled people in Parliament. The network of disabled people in northern Morocco also demands the revision of the legal and constitutional framework so that these people can have access to the various election operations from the preparation of lists to the announcement of results.
Also, an appeal was launched to the various parties to think about the integration of disabled people into the various political programmes and, especially, regarding accessibility and the means to make the lives of these people as easy as possible. On this occasion, the will and possibility of disabled people to participate in the various development programmes that all regions of the north of the Kingdom are experiencing were recalled, knowing that more than three million people (25% of Moroccan households) are disabled and consider themselves an integral part of the socio-economic development of Morocco.
Associative works of the region
On its own, the city of Tetouan counts a dozen associations working within the framework of improving the living conditions of disabled people with the best charitable conditions. Considered a model, the "Hanana" association, protector of disabled and mentally ill children, set the example regarding the management of a charity association, since it trains more than 400 children within the framework of specialised schooling, regular medical review, vocational training for children, and workshops for the maintenance of crutches and wheelchairs. The "Al Hamama" association is another organ for the protection of disabled people. It helps their insertion into the world of work and the creation of small jobs through cooperatives. It is also necessary to recall the role of the "Taha Houssine" Institute for the blind and visually impaired. This institute welcomes more than 70 people of both sexes who follow their studies with the Braille system and live with their families in a wonderful boarding school equipped according to the rules of the art.
