Thanks to the multiple caves, cavities, and underground water sources it houses, Morocco has established itself as a privileged destination, at the level of Africa and even the world, for adventurers and followers of travel exploring the depths of the earth.
A large part of this type of tourist sets its sights on the province of Taza, made famous by the 125 underground cavities it houses, of which the most prized remains undoubtedly the Friouato cave, a true wonder of nature that has not ceased to seduce speleologists around the world.
No human dared to set foot in this chasm of the Douar Chiguer (26 km from Taza), 271 m deep and 2,178 m long, until a group of Moroccan and French adventurers entered it for the first time in the 1930s of the last century, thus achieving an unprecedented feat that paved the way, after meticulous development work, for the exploitation of the site which has become a flagship tourist destination of the province.
Visitors, armed with torches and escorted by a guide, never tire of admiring the underground universe whose precious treasures the cave reveals to them, notably the stalactites, a limestone concretion formed by the erosion of rocks by the work of water, underground lakes, and magnificent paintings of multicoloured rocks.
In order to properly highlight these unique assets and to make the Friouato cave the beating heart of mountain tourism in the province of Taza, it is essential to pool the efforts of all the actors concerned within the framework of a global tourist plan adapted to the geological and ecological characteristics of the province.
Speleology, an activity increasingly in vogue in Morocco, also needs the involvement of stakeholders to strengthen the infrastructure and human resources dedicated to it, create income-generating activities around this type of tourism, increase the reception capacity of hotel establishments, and raise awareness among the local population of the benefits of mountain tourism for sustainable development.
