The Odyssey Association for Culture and Art is organising, from 6 to 8 March in Rabat, the first edition of the Oyoun Street Theatre Festival. This event, organised with the support of the Ministry of Culture and the Mohammed V National Theatre and which sees the participation of professional troupes that have accumulated rich experience in street performances, will be an opportunity to pay tribute to the actress Touria Jabrane in recognition of her contribution to the field of theatre, cinema and television, indicates a press release from the organisers. Touria Jabrane, whose real name is Saâdia Kraytif, is a native of Casablanca. A graduate of the National Conservatory, she began her artistic career in 1972 with the Maâmora company. A talented actress and director, Touria Jabrane created, with Abdelouahed Ouzri, the Masrah Alyaoum company where they stage, together, all their most famous sketches and sitcoms, such as Labass Oualou Bass and Lalla Fatema. Touria Jabrane has also acted in several national, Arab and international television and film productions such as the films ‘Soif’ or ‘Le jour du forain’... and she is a founding member of several humanitarian and human rights organisations. She was also decorated by the late Hassan II with the Wissam of National Merit and she is also a Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters of the French Republic.
In October 2007, Touria Jabrane became Minister of Culture, a position she held until July 2009, when she was replaced by Bensalem Himmich.
During the last tribute paid to her, on the occasion of the 3rd El Jadida Laughter Festival, the speakers were unanimous in stressing that Touria Jabrane is a leading figure in Moroccan and Arab theatre and a symbol of the militant and self-taught woman who has forged an exceptional reputation throughout her career.
For her part, Touria Jabrane expressed her gratitude and thanks for this tribute that will be paid to her by the Odyssey Association, while noting that “through this tribute, it is all Moroccan art that is honoured”.
It should also be remembered that the programme of the Oyoun Street Theatre Festival includes open-air plays at the El Mechouar square, a round table on theatrical writing and the presentation and signing of several books, notably Mohamed Bahjaji's “Catharsis” and Hocine Chaâbi's “Sarrout” (The Key).
The Festival also offers workshops on improvisation, street theatre and scenography led by a group of graduates from the Higher Institute of Dramatic Art and Cultural Animation.
