The Friends of the Abnormal Movement Association sounds the alarm: 30,000 Moroccan Parkinson's patients are suffering

On the occasion of World Parkinson's Day, the Friends of the Abnormal Movement Association organised a conference in Rabat on Wednesday, 11 April, under the theme "In 2012, Parkinson's disease, a public health priority in Morocco", with the aim of allowing the public to learn everything about the shaking palsy in Morocco.
The Friends of the Abnormal Movement Association sounds the alarm: 30,000 Moroccan Parkinson's patients are suffering

On this occasion, Prof. Ouafae Messouak emphasised Parkinson's disease; a chronic neurodegenerative disease that can generally affect humans from the age of 50, following the death of the black substances that produce dopamine in the brain. With the loss of this chemical messenger, the human being thus loses the balance of his movements (conversely, an excess of dopamine could be at the origin of symptoms associated with schizophrenia). She thus explained to the public that the genetic factor is, until now, the only reason known by neurologists concerning the causes of this disease. On the other hand, the causes and means of prevention against this disease remain mysterious, given that scientific research has not led to any result at this stage. That is why no one is safe from this disease! "Even if a man or a woman is affected by Parkinson's, it is recommended to consult a physiotherapist and continue to practise their daily movements, independently of the help of their family members," specified the physiotherapist Nora Mansouri, during her intervention. She also stressed the importance of sport, provided it is well programmed, and also of the psychic support of the patient by his entourage in order to make him independent in his movements.

At the end of these two interventions, a question-and-answer session allowed the audience composed of patients and their families who came from different cities of the Kingdom to ask questions. The majority of these concerned the coverage of drug treatment. And for those whose drugs have no effect on the body, surgery remains the only solution, but it remains very expensive for the economically weak (from 300,000 DH). Consequently, the Association Les Amis du mouvement anormal intervenes by covering more than 200,000 DH of the cost of the operation.

There are more than 30,000 Parkinson's patients at the present time, this means that it affects about 1 to 2% of the population over 50 years old, and over the next few years, 50,000 people could be affected by Parkinson's disease.
