Mohammed Assalmi at Nobl’ys Gallery: A painting in the colours of the terroir

Capturing the identity markers of his terroir, Mohammed Assalmi transmits the landscapes of the South with sensitivity, drawing inspiration from their colours, their compositions, and their impregnable beauty. A beauty that only someone who has lived under their charm can transcribe with fidelity and love. But without giving the impression of copying them like a postcard. Such is the genius of Mohammed Assalmi. A talented artist, himself part of this world and knowing it perfectly.

"I myself am a son of the South. I consider myself a student of the Tafilalet School of Fine Arts. Therefore, the colours and themes I choose are born in this region, and I translate them in my own way, infusing them with my own feelings and my own reflection. I never do postcard work," emphasises Mr Assalmi. This essential name in academic figuration has managed to touch all audiences, amateurs and professionals alike. His painting, with its personalised style, does not leave one indifferent, because it is fertile and very profound.

"The allusive painting of Mohammed Assalmi highlights a nostalgia that reflects the deep gaze of plural Morocco through the movement and richness of colours and landscapes. He has been able to create the alchemy of colours and scintillations, giving a soul to the characters and staging the details and the chromatic effect. He expresses his passion for his native land, which he depicts with dexterity and meticulousness," specifies art critic Abdellah Cheikh.

He adds that Mohammed Assalmi is a true witness of his time whose work remains a platform for staging the brush and the paint. He is considered the cantor of the interior frescoes of the familiar world, or even the accredited ambassador of the people in the shadows. His characters and his living landscapes exude a finely traced intimacy and engage in a deep, almost personal quest. A halo of mystery and an autonomous visual world, painting for Assalmi is a hymn to the Being in all its states of mind. "It is with another vision that I work on my portraits, trying to make them alive and expressive to stay far from the photo-portrait genre," explains the artist. As a result, his hypersensitivity allows him to carry out original, highly sought-after work.

"Assalmi works on the universe of apparent beauty, spirit, and art, through a path enriched by a singular pictorial experience that is continually questioned, and contemplations drawn from an evolutionary reflection. A painter of nostalgic impressionism, he has skilfully mixed poems and chromatic magic in his canvases, which bear witness to his undeniable talent," adds Abdellah Cheikh
