Making Ouarzazate an ecological city

Making Ouarzazate an ecological city

A budget of 53 million dirhams has been mobilized for the construction of a new landfill, the restoration, and the closure of old landfills in Ouarzazate.

The new landfill, built as part of a partnership agreement between the municipality of Ouarzazate and the rural commune of Tarmiket and financed by the delegated ministry in charge of the Environment, will make it possible to protect the region's ecosystems, create stable jobs, and encourage tourism investment, affirmed the president of the Ouarzazate Municipal Council, Moulay Abderrahman Drissi.

The landfill, which covers an area of 10 hectares, essentially aims at the management of the waste collection and treatment sector for a duration of 15 to 20 years.

This project, located far from any water table or residential groups, offers several advantages, notably concerning the storage and treatment of waste and the protection of public health by allowing populations to access quality services in terms of household waste management, by mobilizing technical and logistical means meeting the international norms and standards in force.

In this regard, Abderrahman Drissi estimated that this project constitutes an important step towards strengthening basic infrastructure for the emergence of the local economy, the protection of the environment, and the implementation of the necessary mechanisms for the promotion of tourism.

The old public landfill represented a black spot in Ouarzazate and greatly affected the health of the populations because it did not comply with the international standards in force.
