To improve water resource management in the city of Laâyoune .. the construction progress of the Sakia El Hamra dam reaches 75 percent

The completion rate of the Sakia El Hamra dam reconstruction project has reached 75%, a vital project aimed at protecting the city of Laâyoune and surrounding areas from floods. It also contributes to supporting the water table by enhancing water storage, as its capacity reaches 112 million cubic metres, extending over an area of 2,335 hectares., according to the MadiAlna platform.

The platform stated that "in addition to its role in flood protection and water security, the project will contribute to providing direct and indirect job opportunities during the construction period, as these opportunities are expected to reach about 54,000 working days, through national expertise."

The source added that "the Sakia El Hamra dam is one of the important projects that strengthen the water infrastructure in the region and contribute to sustainable development by improving water resource management and reducing risks resulting from floods. It is noteworthy that the Minister of Equipment and Water made a field visit to the Sakia El Hamra dam in the city of Laâyoune today, Friday, January 31, 2025, within the framework of the meeting of the Administrative Council of the Sakia El Hamra and Oued Eddahab Hydraulic Basin Agency – 2024 session. He was accompanied by the Wali of the Laâyoune-Sakia El Hamra region, as well as the governors of the provinces of Tarfaya, Boujdour, and Smara. This visit aimed to follow up on the progress of the work on the reconstruction and rehabilitation of the dam."
