The fight against defamation and electronic blackmail in the era of new information and communication technologies was at the centre of an awareness-raising meeting organised last Thursday in Laâyoune by the National Commission for the Control of the Protection of Personal Data (CNDP).
Initiated in cooperation with the Moroccan Observatory for the Fight against Defamation and Extortion, this symposium, held under the theme "The protection of personal data against defamation and the lack of respect for privacy in the world of the press", aims to raise awareness about the risks of digital defamation and blackmail.
During this meeting, explanations were provided on the efforts made at the national level to strengthen the fight against abuses related to the unauthorised and malicious dissemination of personal data and information, as well as on complaint mechanisms for victims of this type of crime.
In addition to the CNDP's commitment to the protection of privacy and personal data of individuals in the era of the development of new information technologies, emphasis was placed on the role of the Moroccan Observatory for the Fight against Defamation and Extortion, particularly regarding the handling of issues related to these two phenomena.
The rights and obligations of the press and the role of the media in raising awareness about the seriousness of these phenomena and in the fight against fake news were also at the centre of the debates.
Participants in this regional symposium also received details on Law No. 08-09 relating to the protection of individuals with regard to the processing of personal data and the conduct to be followed in the event of defamation and blackmail, in particular recourse to the justice system.
This regional symposium is part of a series of awareness-raising actions organised this week across several regions of the Kingdom and addressing various themes, including "The role of personal data protection in strengthening constitutional values", "Personal data protection in the service of investment", and "Personal data protection in the service of Compulsory Health Insurance (AMO)".
