The year 2014 will be marked by the completion of several development projects in Laâyoune, which has become a major economic, social, cultural, and sporting hub at the Kingdom level, but also at the West African level. Indeed, the city is experiencing, within the framework of its urban development, the realisation of two projects that will be completed at the end of the current year, namely the development of the Oum Saad square and the Route de Smara avenue. The development of the Oum Saad square, which covers an area of 8 hectares, includes the construction of a modern conference centre, a large theatre, a children's playground, and green spaces, all for a budget of 240 million dirhams. An indoor swimming pool, meeting international standards allowing it to host world competitions, and a multi-sports hall are also under construction for a budget of 160 million dirhams. The strengthening of the city's infrastructure also includes the construction of a bus station and a municipal library for an amount of 56 million dirhams. The list of projects launched by the municipal council of Laâyoune also includes the construction of a new landfill, the rehabilitation of the old city at Souk Lamkhakh, the rehabilitation and construction of a hundred luminous fountains, as well as the development of old public squares. All of these projects have inherited a budget of 140 million dirhams. Those who had already visited it in the 80s and 90s described the city of Laâyoune as a miracle city, endowed with infrastructure and equipment that some African capitals did not have. The capital of the Southern provinces is thus in perpetual embellishment, equipping itself with modern tourist and cultural infrastructure, raising it not only to the rank of the great cities of the Kingdom, but also to that of several world capitals.
