In response to the allegations of the so-called Aminatou Haidar, according to which law enforcement went to her home in Laayoune, that she was struck by elements of the said forces, and that her personal car suffered damage, an authorised source at the Laayoune Wilaya contacted by MAP specified that during the afternoon of Thursday 1 November 2012, Aminatou Haidar set fire to a tyre before knocking on neighbours' doors while haranguing children and young people, inciting them to go out into the street to demonstrate on the occasion of the visit to Laayoune of Christopher Ross, personal envoy of the United Nations Secretary-General.
She then went to several districts of the city where she repeated the same actions, adds the same source, specifying that law enforcement did not approach her at any time and did not touch her at all, aware that it is a provocation to which the person concerned is accustomed to resorting on such occasions. Aminatou Haidar returned home in the early evening in the company of a few members of the CODESA which she chairs. She then circulated allegations according to which law enforcement did not stop harassing her throughout this day, took away her car, and that no one knew where she was during all this time, it is emphasised from the same source.
Furthermore, the elected officials and chioukhs of the Sahrawi tribes of the Southern provinces stressed during a meeting, on Thursday, with Christopher Ross, that the autonomy initiative presented by Morocco constitutes the only and most efficient solution for the settlement of the Sahara issue. In statements to the press, they indicated having shared with Mr. Ross the "constant conviction" of the Sahrawis regarding the relevance of this initiative, recalling that they contributed to its development through, in particular, the Royal Advisory Council for Saharan Affairs (CORCAS). During this meeting, the emphasis was placed on the strong conviction of the inhabitants of the Southern provinces regarding the crucial importance that the territorial integrity of the Kingdom holds. Mr. Ross will continue his visit to the city of Laayoune with a series of meetings with local authorities, the chioukhs of the Sahrawi tribes, members of CORCAS, civil society actors, and human rights defenders.
