For the first time, two beaches located in the southern provinces of the Kingdom, among the 64 registered this year in the "Clean Beaches" programme, have obtained the "Blue Flag" eco-label, awarded jointly by the Mohammed VI Foundation for Environmental Protection, chaired by HRH Princess Lalla Hasnaa, and the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE). A statement from the Mohammed VI Foundation for Environmental Protection indicates that in recognition of the actions implemented by the municipalities, the concerned administrations, and the economic partners of the Mohammed VI Foundation to meet international standards, the "Blue Flag" will be hoisted this summer on 20 beaches, including Foum Loued (Laâyoune) and Foum Labouir (Dakhla). Obtaining the "Blue Flag" is dependent on the compliance of beach development and management with criteria to be respected regarding the general environment, water management, waste management, and environmental education, the statement explains. Foum El Oued beach, located 25 km south of the city, stretches over a distance of 11 km and remains the most important in the Laâyoune-Boujdour-Sakia El Hamra region due to its proximity to the city of Laâyoune and Al-Marsa, and experiences a large flow of holidaymakers every summer. This beach is Laâyoune's gateway to the Atlantic Ocean. Served by the N°1 national road and well-maintained despite the challenge of sand encroachment, Foum El Oued is known for its fish-rich waters, which whet the appetite of holidaymakers who are fishing enthusiasts to practise their favourite hobby there. This seaside resort, destined to become the engine of local development, is also equipped with significant tourist infrastructure consisting of a large hotel, summer residences, and villas. This beach welcomes more than 80,000 holidaymakers from neighbouring cities during each summer season. The corniche is accessible by a well-maintained paved road. Located in the magnificent bay of Oued Eddahab-Lagouira, Foum Labouir is ranked by some international media specialising in water sports in second place after Hawaii. This beach welcomes water sports amateurs and professionals throughout the year and is now home to several surfing and other water sports schools. Great international windsurfers come to train there every year. Along the entire southern coast stretching from Guelmim to Dakhla (approximately 1,000 km) lie immense beaches with continuous sand for hundreds of kilometres, bordered by Sahara dunes, thus giving these infinite and desert-like sandy beaches a wild beauty that makes one want to discover these still little-known regions.
