The richness of Moroccan Sahrawi handicrafts was in the spotlight during the 7th edition of the Regional Handicraft Fair. The city of Laâyoune hosted last week the 7th edition of the Regional Handicraft Fair with the participation of about forty exhibitors. The organisers chose "Handicrafts at the service of local development" as the theme of this event initiated by the Laâyoune Chamber of Handicrafts in partnership with the House of the Artisan and the wilaya of the Laâyoune-Boujdour-Sakia El Hamra region. This fair is intended to be a space dedicated to the valorisation and marketing of local products and to highlighting the specificities and originality of the local artisanal product, and aims to promote the sector and its role in regional development, an opportunity to forge friendly, fraternal, and business relations between exhibitors and artisans of the province and those who came from other regions. "This event is also intended to be an opportunity to contribute to the promotion of the local and regional artisanal product and to bring together people in the trade in order to know their expectations and try to find solutions to the problems of the sector and constituted an occasion to know the needs of the market and the exchange of experiences between professionals of the sector," underlined Abderrahman Sniba, the president of the Laâyoune Chamber of Handicrafts. This fair, which comes within the framework of the national strategy aimed at highlighting and promoting national handicrafts, allowed artisans to exhibit their products, highlight their talents, and improve their income. In addition to exhibitors from the Laâyoune-Boujdour-Sakia El Hamra region, the fair, set up in 40 stands, also saw the participation of exhibitors representing the cities of Agadir, Taroudant, and Smara, who exhibited leather products, jewellery, carpets, copper, and Sahrawi clothing and various artisanal creations. Throughout a week, this fair highlighted the creativity, richness, and diversity of handicraft production at the regional level, some of whose local products are known and marketed on a national, or even international, scale. The organisation of Regional Handicraft Fairs comes within the framework of the national "Vision 2015" strategy, whose objectives consist of creating jobs, giving a strong impetus to product quality, improving the situation of artisans, and developing the handicraft sector. The opening ceremony of this edition took place in the presence, in particular, of Khalil Dakhil, the wali of the Laâyoune-Boujdour-Sakia El Hamra region, judicial and local authorities, and heads of external services.
